Seniors commonly experience foot ailments because of aging, lifestyle factors, and underlying health conditions. It's important to be aware of changes to the body as we age; and here are some of the most prevalent foot problems among seniors:
Arthritis
Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are common in seniors and can affect the joints in the feet, causing pain, stiffness, and swelling. It's important to consult with your GP at the first signs of Arthritis. They can provide advice on physical therapies and medications that can help manage arthritis.
Bunions
Bunions are bony bumps that form on the joint at the base of the big toe and small toe. Bunions can be very painful and they are difficult to correct. Bunions can be eased by gently aligning the toe joints, cushioned with gel pads, and it's essential to wear suitable footwear that doesn't place pressure on the bunions.
Plantar Fasciitis
This condition involves inflammation of the plantar fascia - the tissue that runs along the bottom of the feet. It can result in heel pain and make walking unbearably painful. The good news is it can be treated with stretching, elastic sleeves and braes, and gentle massage. Rolling your foot over a wine bottle is a home remedy people often use when they experience plantar fasciitis.
Neuropathy
Neuropathy and other forms of nerve damage can cause tingling, numbness, and burning sensations. Not only does it cause discomfort, there's also an increased risk of injury and ulcers. It's essential to discuss Neuropathy with your GP.
Corns and Calluses
Often associated with wearing tight, impractical shoes, these thickened areas of skin commonly develop on pressure points or areas of friction on the feet, leading to discomfort and pain. The good news is there are many topical lotions and creams available from your local pharmacy to treat corns and calluses at home. Soaking your feet in warm water with epsom salts followed by lightly shaving the skin is also a safe and effective home treatment.
Ingrown Toenails
Ingrown toenails can occur when the edge of the toenail grows into the surrounding skin, leading to pain, swelling, and infection.
